About Us
SpeechWorks has been in existence for more than ten years and provides specialized diagnostic and treatment services to children and adults with communication disorders. The company is also responsible for the supervision of speech-language pathologists meeting registration requirements to practice in Manitoba.
SpeechWorks has received a number of grants over the years from agencies such as the Workers Compensation Board and the Winnipeg Foundation. These grants have allowed partnering with organizations including the Stroke Recovery Association of Manitoba, the Parkinson Society Manitoba and the Manitoba Brain Injury Association.
SpeechWorks Biographies
Allison Baird
Allison Baird is a speech-language pathologist who has worked as a therapist, manager and researcher. She has been certified by the
Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CASLPA-ACOA), the American Association of
Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (ASHA), and, most recently, by the Health Professions Council
for the United Kingdom. She is also registered with the Manitoba Speech and Hearing Association (MSHA). Allison has
been nominated for the YMCA-YWCA Woman of Distinction Award and is the past president of the Manitoba Speech and Hearing Association.
Allison has experience as a therapist with adults in hospital and with children with severe developmental delays and disorders. She has presented papers and workshops at Provincial, National and International conferences and she has instructed at the University of Manitoba. She has supervised almost 40 graduate students and young speech language pathologists plus countless volunteers. She holds a Master of Arts Degree in Speech and Language Pathology from the University of North Dakota and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from Brandon University.
Y. Gale Hume
Gale Hume is a retired registered nurse with experience in supervision and counseling who has also taught at the Saint Boniface General
Hospital. Currently she is a Teaching Assistant at the University of Manitoba for courses in the Faculty of Nursing. Gale holds a Master of
Educational Psychology with a major in counseling along with her nursing diploma and considerable experience in both marriage and family
counseling.
Gale's experience with SpeechWorks began when her husband, S.J. Hume, experienced a stroke. During the rehabilitation process she worked closely with Allison and now brings her sensitivity and experience to every workshop she attends.
Candace Myers
Candace Myers is a speech-language pathologist who has worked as a therapist, teacher and researcher. She has been certified by the
Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CASLPA-ACOA), and is registered with the
Manitoba Speech and Hearing Association (MSHA). She has worked extensively with CancerCare Manitoba and with the
Telehealth program and specializes in voice problems and accent modification for adults and children.
Her experience includes volunteering in Bangladesh and teaching the course “Introduction to Speech and Language Disorders in Children” at the University of Winnipeg. In the past she has presented papers and workshops nationally and internationally and in 2001 Candace received the Eve Kassirer Award for outstanding professional achievement in Speech-Language Pathology.
Candace holds a Master of Science in Human Communications Disorders, Speech-Language Pathology, from Dalhousie University. She also holds a Bachelor of Education degree in Special Education and a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Mathematics from Acadia University.
Corine M. Porier
Corine Poirier is a speech-language pathologist who has worked as a therapist, teacher and researcher. She is registered with the Manitoba Speech and Hearing Association (MSHA). She has made presentations to the National Stroke Conference, the Canadian RAI Conference and the Office of the Public Trustees, amongst others.
Corine holds a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Washington and a Bachelor of Science in Speech Pathology from the University of Alberta.
Karen Sansregret
Karen Sansregret is a speech-language pathologist with considerable experience working with children from Grades K to 12 as a
therapist, teacher and researcher. She has been certified by the Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists
(CASLPA-ACOA), and is registered with the Manitoba Speech and Hearing Association (MSHA).
Karen holds a Master of Speech-Language Pathology and a Master of Arts in Cognitive Developmental Psychology from the University of Alberta.
