Speechworks Services for Youngsters

The Speech-Language Pathologists at Speechworks provide a wide variety of services related to difficulties in communication or swallowing. Some of our specific treatment options include:

Brain Fitness for the Healthy Brain

This is a group program offered to people who want to sharpen their overall brain fitness. Three group sessions are offered over ten weeks using "Brain Fitness" software from Posit Science, brain stimulation software supported by an impressive body of research.

Memory Enhancement after Brain Injury

This research program was funded by a 2007 Workers Compensation Board, Community Initiatives and Research Program, and is conducted in partnership with the Manitoba Brain Injury Association. The purpose of this project is to investigate the effects on the memory and attention of the brain injured person after eight weeks of training with the "Brain Fitness" software program. Contact MBIA if you or someone you know would like more information.

Speechworks for Youngsters

Both traditional therapy and computer based treatment options will be available starting in July of 2008 for preschoolers and school-age children. We work closely with parents, teachers, assistants, and caregivers to achieve the best outcomes in treating speech and language delays and disorders of all degrees. Please see the related article Communicating With Your Child.

SpeechWorks Toolkit

The SpeechWorks Toolkit consists of over 25 tools designed to promote (or restore) participation in life. Each toolkit has been rigorously field tested to ensure their effectiveness. See our example of the Week at a Glance resource.

Survival Program for Persons Living with Aphasia

Helping People with Aphasia Live in a World of Words

This group program for people with aphasia and their partners runs for eight weeks and is facilitated by both a Speech-Language Pathologist and a Counsellor. All participants receive a "Survival Kit for People Living with Aphasia" and learn strategies for coping with aphasia from each other as well as the facilitators.

Swallowing Assessment

Swallowing assessments are provided in hospital or home and focus on developing strategies for minimizing the effects of swallowing problems. We are particularly sensitive to the ethical dilemmas and compromises related to feeding and swallowing commonly experienced by clients, family members, and professional care givers.

Voice Therapy

These services are for teachers, fitness instructors, or professional singers - anyone who relies on their voice and whose voice has changed as a result of their work. The emphasis in Voice Treatment is correct voice use combined with vocal hygiene.
